THE CHILD RESILIENCY PROGRAMME

Began in 2006 as an outreach programme of the Hope United Church, under the umbrella of the Hope counseling and Wellness Centre. It seeks to meet the needs of pre-adolescents and build on their competencies as the most effective strategy for preventing multiple problems. It also aims to focus on promoting physical, social, cognitive, vocational and moral competence.

In 2014 the Child Resiliency Programme (CRP) began operating out of the Violence Prevention Alliance, UWI and spread its wings to the Kingston YMCA, Boys Town, west Kingston and Falmouth All age School and in 2017 to Sam Sharpe Teachers College, Montego Bay. It is a collaborative effort between schools, community organizations, church, families and health services in order to build a broad enough network of protection for our young.

In 2022, CRP partnered with The Peace Institute and Extended Learning Centre of the International University of the Caribbean (IUC) and expanded its objectives to include training in Peace, Resiliency and Wellness (PRW).

OVERALL PROGRAMME GOAL

The building of resilient children and adolescents by a long term developmental process that involves integration of our neighbouring schools, mental health services, church and community organisations.

Core Basis of Child Resiliency Programme

The life stories of resilient youth who have now grown into adulthood teach us that competence, caring and confidence resulting in the highest levels of productivity can flourish even under adverse circumstances if children encounter persons who provide them with a secure basis for the development of trust, autonomy and initiative.

  • Shifting paradigms from a focus on individual risk and deficit to one of global protection and strength
  • Holistic rather than a piecemeal problematic based programme.
  • Our overall goal is the protection of vulnerable children and adolescents through a long term developmental process based on existing resiliency research. Each child, refered to the programme by the guidance counselor or principal of the neighboring schools, is considered to be at promise.
  • Currently 60 children at KYMCA, 60 children at Boys Town, 60 at Sam Sharpe Teachers College and 40 children at Falmouth All Age school from the neighbouring primary schools are in the programme.
