This involves strengthening connections between the child and any positive person or activity. Based on the evidence that adolescents with strong positive bonds are far less likely to be involved in risk behaviour than those without these bonds

The most crucial of all the elements that promote resiliency. It is virtually impossible to successfully overcome adversity without succumbing to high risk behaviour without the presence of a trusting relationship, even a single adult that says “you matter”

It is obvious that children will work harder and do things even simple things like add fractions for people they love and trust”

Show them they matter
  • Notice the child/adolescent
  • Know his/her name
  • Draw out those not readily participating
  • Investigate and intervene when students dealing with difficult circumstances
  • Recognize when they do something “good”
  • Offer them a chance to succeed in something!
  • Provide unconditional positive regard and encouragement
SET AND COMMUNICATE HIGH EXPECTATIONS
BOUNDARIES ARE IMPORTANT

It is important that expectations be both high and realistic to be effective. Eg. “ What I’m asking you to do is important: I know you can do it and I wont give up on you”

Communicate both directly and indirectly in all arenas: Morally, Physically, Socially, Academically, Emotionally

PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR MEANINGFUL PARTICIPTION
Get INVOLVED

This involves giving the child/adolescent a lot of responsibility for what goes on. We must provide opportunities for them to solve problems, make decisions, plan, set goals and help others

Must adopt the attitude that the pre-adolescent we are involved with is a great resource rather than a passive object or problem
Involvement is critical to success!

SET CLEAR AND CONSISTENT BOUNDARIES
mean what you say

Consistent in clearly communicating behaviour expectations and appropriate consequences that are consistently enforced. This must be done with an attitude of caring rather than punishment

A STRONG Referral Network

The hallmark of the Child Resiliency Programme of the Violence Prevention Alliance is its strong connection to the church, school, police and community in all aspects. Community family members will be expected to provide advocacy services and the integration of informal as well as existing formal supports is critical!
