- To increase parent’s resilience, knowledge, confidence and support base so that they in turn will be able to encourage positive behavioural outcomes in their adolescent.
- To equip parents to model and better communicate with their adolescent about positive sexual and reproductive health practices, violence prevention and drug abuse prevention practices.
TOPics & Modules
Two 2 hour training seminars are conducted per term. Each parent completes a baseline parent questionaire and is taken through “A curriculum for Parents of Adolescents” over a period of 1 year including:

What kind of Parent Do I want to be?
Unit 2:
Promoting Self, Emotional Social and Cognitive Development of Adolescents including the following lessons:
- Defining a Positive Self Image
- Building Self Esteem
- Effective Communication
- Supportive Peer Friendships
- Adolescent Sexuality
- Problem Solving and Decision Making Skills
- Handling Anger and Conflict
- Renegotiating Roles and Responsibilities
- Setting and Achieving Goals
Unit 3
STI/HIV and Pregnancy Prevention
Unit 4:
PreventingAbuse and Violence at Home and in the Community
Unit 5:
Helping my Adolescent Resist Drugs and Alcohol.
Unit 6:
Handling Grief and Building Resilience
The Parent/Family Support Co-ordinator also provides 20 Individual Parent/Child/Family Counseling Sessions per term for those children and their families who are referred.
